Ed's 10 Interviewing Steps For Getting the HIS Job You Want

1)     Always dress for success! Even if you do not normally dress up at your current job or even if you know the company you will interview with dresses casually, dress for success. Men should wear a dark suit, white or blue plain shirt and a tie. Women should wear a pantsuit or dress and never dress provocatively.

2)     Practice a strong handshake and an enthusiastic greeting such as “Pleased to meet you ______. I’ve been looking forward to telling you about myself and finding out more about the opportunity at your company”.

3)     Answer questions completely and not with yes or no. Elaborate on which vendor systems and applications you have “hands on” implementation and training experience.

4)     Try not to be negative about past employers or anything else.

5)      Be positive about the skills and experiences you bring to the table. Try to show the people you are interviewing with why hiring you will benefit their company.

6)      Ask good questions to show your interest. Find out about the job, growth potential and the company. Never leave an interview without getting a gut feeling about whether this is a job you want, these are the kind of people you’d enjoy being around as part of a team, and this is an organization that matches your ethics and growth potential.

7)      Often different people will interview you. Never take it for granted that one person told another about you. Sell yourself to each person by letting him or her know what you bring to the table.

8)      Always leave an interview knowing you have presented a strong picture of what you have done, what you can bring to the job, and how you can benefit the organization.

9)      Thank the interviewer before leaving. If this is the job you want, show your interest and ask for it. An example would be “ Thank you _____ for speaking with me today. I really want this job. I think I’m highly qualified and would be a real asset to your organization. Is there anything else that I can provide to help you make your decision?”

10)  Immediately email a thank you note to each interviewer. Again reiterate your desire for the job and why you would be a good fit.
